Bath and Body Works

Bath and Body Works is having a very good sale until July 5th. Some of their products are 50 to 75 percent off. We bought a wallflower for $5, shampoos and conditioners are $3 each, antibacterial, mosturizing soaps for $2.50 each, and little bottles of antibacterial gel for $1 each. Some of these products they said they don’t normally carry but they got them in for the sale. Savana used the sale to get her friend a nice birthday gift. She bought a gift bag from there for .62 cents including the tissue paper, the sales associate took the price tags off and placed them in the gift bag for her. If you like bubble baths, lotions, scented soaps, etc or need a good gift this is a good sale to shop.

Saving on Electricity

I’m so glad the pollen is gone and the weather is finally warm. Now I can hang my clothes out on the line. Using a dryer not only runs up the electric bill it’s also bad for the environment plus your clothes last longer when you hang them to dry. I hang clothes in the house all winter but I love the smell of the fresh air when they line dry.

Craigs List

I love this site, it is so awesome. This site is where I found my job and Charlie’s. I have also used it to advertise yard  sales. I got on here the other night just browsing (one of my favorite things to do) and found somebody on here wanting you to take a survey. For a couple of hours of my time I made $20 which will go to Savana to help pay for soccer. I also have several things to sell that I will be posting on here. Go here to check it out if you haven’t already.

America’s Thrift Store

If you have one of these thrift stores close to you it’s worth checking out. I go to thrift stores for bargains but I’ve never been a huge fan of them, until now. I love this store, it is new to Athens so I decided to go see what it was like. I have a hard time finding jeans that I like and that fit, I have found several pair here for under $3 a pair. We have also found several things for Savana as well. The last time we went we left with a  big bag of clothes and paid a little over $16.  Go here to check out the site for locations, I love the picture they have on their home page. If you have one have fun shopping.

Summer Reading

Every year just like many other kids Savana has to read a book during the summer for her Lit. Class. I usually spend at least $10 for a book she really doesn’t want to read. Not this year, I went to paperbackswap.com and found her summer reading book. Perfect. If you love reading as much as I do and do not like buying all the books paperback swap is a good place to trade them. I have found several great books on here, we use this site for Charlie also. While he is driving he likes to listen to the audio cd’s, they have a good variety of these too.  Go here  to check it out. Continue reading

Gardening/Frugal Flop

Everybody has frugal flops here and there I keep having them when it comes to my garden. I bought seeds (cheaper than plants), planted them in cardboard egg cartons with organic soil. This way I can have an organic garden and after cutting the egg cartons apart I could just plant the whole thing. They were growing great so I put them outside during the day for the sun to make them stronger. A strong wind came and blew them all over the front yard. I replanted them and decided to take them outside a few hours a day for the sun. After a few days I looked outside and a bird was eating my seeds, arg. So now I’ve had to go out and get some new seeds for the tomatoes and I’ll buy a few pepper plants…not so frugal. I also planted several kinds of herb seeds, after they got big enough to put outside it rained so hard it beat my poor plants and broke most of them. I will start over with them too. It will not be the garden I had planned but at least we will get a few things. Maybe next year I will have better luck. The good thing about being this late I did buy the hanging tomato and strawberry planters half price (upside down ones) and some of the gardening stuff I need to buy is half price at Walmart. If I actually get something to grow I will post pictures. I hope if your planting/planted a garden you were able to do it frugal-y and earth friendly and are having much better luck.

Recycling The Right Way

I started recycling a couple of years ago. I figured every little bit helps the planet. It also cuts down on the garbage around here which saves on the county trash bags we have to buy. When I watched Oprah’s Earth Day show I discovered there were some things I was doing wrong. Yesterday I decided to research recycling and found out I was not only recycling some things wrong there were also some things I didn’t know could be recycled.

One of the things I learned were the bottle caps were made of a different kind of plastic then the bottles. The recycling places are taking the caps off and throwing them away, they wind up in the ocean and the marine animals eat them. Some of the animals choke on them and die, this was really sad to me.

Here are some of great websites I found yesterday that were very helpful:

A Recycling Revolution: recycling facts

Live Positively Coca Cola: getting involved and kids information

Earth 911: This has a lot of information, it was my favorite site. I got interested in this site and stayed on it for at least an hour with out realizing it.

Recycling 101: This is a link off of Earth 911, it’s has very important info.

I know that all this info can be very overwhelming. Yesterday I had to start taking it one step at a time when I was reading it and trying to decide what I could do. I hope the ones of you that recycle will continue and that this helps. The ones of you that don’t I hope you start soon, it doesn’t take much time and it could help save our planet.

Looking back on April

I hope everybody had a good April. Since it was Earth month I tried to really take a look at what I could change to be more green. Not sure I could change much just need to take the step even when I feel lazy. I like to be frugal but also green, thankfully they go hand in hand most of the time. I hope everybody got to see Oprah’s Earth Day show, it was very good and educational.

Here are some of the things I did in April:

Planted flowers on Earth Day with the kids.

Hung several loads of clothes outside to dry. (I can do this more since the pollen is gone)

Made sure I turned off all lights and went behind the kids to make sure they did.

Planted seeds for my vegetable and flower gardens in cardboard egg cartons, using organic seed starter.

Bought toilet paper made from recycled paper.

Bought some Eco friendly cleaning products using coupons of course.

Changed out a few more lights with the CF light bulbs. I really wish they would improve these but they do help the electric bill as well as the planet.

Recycled even when I didn’t feel like washing out the cans and stuff. This also help with the trash bags I have to buy. Also helps out on the number of times I have to run to the dump, saving on the gas.

Tried to combine trips so it uses less gas.
